Etiquette for Virtual Learning

Rules and Etiquette While Interacting in a Virtual Training Setting

Whether you are an instructor, facilitator, or a participant, you have, no doubt, experienced the joys and tribulations of virtual learning, or meetings. You can probably list at least a few things that may have annoyed you about your instructor, fellow students, or your own ability to engage in a virtual learning experience. Common etiquette rules for virtual learning can improve everyone's experience in this educational setting.

Virtual Meeting

The following bulleted list serves as a checklist for you to use before you begin your next virtual learning experience. If you are an instructor, feel free to share the checklist with your participants as part of their preparation materials.

Proper Etiquette for Virtual Learning Checklist

  • Equipment and Materials

  • Prepare your environment and equipment ahead of time to avoid unexpected issues.

  • Test your equipment (camera, mic, computer, monitor).

  • Test your Wi-Fi strength.

  • Download the appropriate apps and materials.

  • Read all instructions that have been sent prior to the training session.

  • Open the materials on your desktop that will be needed for the session.

  • Setting

  • Choose a space that is conducive to learning.

  • Eliminate noise.

  • Avoid a busy environment.

  • Mute when you are not talking.

  • Use a headset/mic to minimize extraneous noise.

  • Use a background that is appropriate and/or neutral.

  • Take steps to avoid being interrupted.

  • Use a room that allows you to be closed off from other people and activities.

  • Inform others nearby that you are not to be disturbed.

  • Put away distractions.

  • Move other devices and work out of reach to avoid multitasking.

  • Cover outside windows if the outside activities are distracting.

  • Camera

  • Keep your camera on.

  • Set the camera at an appropriate angle and distance so that your face is visible.

  • Light the space to make your face visible to the instructor.

  • Side Conversations

  • Avoid chatting with others in the comments box during the lesson unless the instructor explicitly encourages it.

  • Avoid having conversations with people on other devices or in your immediate location.

  • Breakout Sessions

  • Follow the same etiquette as in the regular session unless otherwise instructed.

  • Be an active participant.

  • Communication

  • Follow your instructor’s communication protocol for asking questions during the lesson. If a method was not mentioned, always ask. Possible options:

  • Using the raised hand icon.

  • Using the comments box.

  • Responding without being called on.

  • Writing down questions and waiting until the designated Q and A section.

  • Be aware of how your comments might affect others.

  • Use your professional voice, avoiding slang and potentially offensive language and anecdotes.

  • Never laugh at or diminish another person’s question or comment.

  • Never interrupt when someone else is speaking.

  • Be a good listener.

  • Have the instructor’s contact information in case you are disconnected or have to unexpectedly leave.

Most importantly, be an active participant so that you can get the most out of your training!
